Construction of unauthorised churches on the land of the tribals in Surat, Gujarat

Villagers allege that conversion is being used to destroy their culture

Surat (Gujarat) – It has come to light that an illegal church is being constructed on Adivasi land in Bahar village of Umarpada. The local Hindus of Bahar have strongly opposed this construction. Villagers have stated that no building permission of any sort was acquired for the structure.

According to members of the Adivasi community, this church has become a centre encouraging conversion activities in the area. Attractive inducements are being offered to lure people into converting, and this, they say, is part of a larger conspiracy to destroy their traditional culture and customs.

A member of the Adivasi community said, “Since ancient times, our people have worshipped Nagadev, Gowaldev, Waghdev and other deities. These practices have existed since time immemorial; however, in recent years, large churches have been constructed in Adivasi regions, and unauthorised gatherings are being organised. Innocent Adivasis are being enticed and converted. This conspiracy aims to eradicate our Adivasi culture.”

Villagers demand action against the responsible pastor.

Villagers have demanded action against the pastor of the Christian organisation involved in this illegal construction and have submitted a memorandum to the local administration at Umarpada.
