Mumbai – All compartments of Mumbai local trains will be fully air-conditioned on the lines of the Metro. The doors of these locals will open and close automatically. This major announcement was made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis while speaking at the ‘Indian Model United Nations – Youth Connect’ session. He also stated that several developmental changes will take place in the next five years.
This decision has been taken considering the accidents that occur when passengers hang from the doors of local trains and the difficulties caused by excessive crowding.
The Chief Minister added –
1. Even though we plan to build world-class local trains, the fare of the second-class tickets will not increase even by a single Rupee. At the same fare, passengers will get a Metro-like travel experience in the locals.
2. The new Metro-level facilities will significantly enhance passenger safety, and the daily commute of Mumbaikars will become smoother and more comfortable.
3. These upgrades will be carried out through the Mumbai Urban Transport Project as a joint effort of the Union Government and the State Government. As a result, the face of Mumbai local trains – one of the most crowded suburban railway systems in the world – will be completely transformed.
