The historic Shiva temple in Kerala locked due to threats from SDPI

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – Following threats from the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), a political party associated with the banned Jihadi organisation Popular Front of India (PFI), the municipal council officials have closed the main entrance of the ancient Shiva temple. The repairs at the Aralummudu Shivapuram Shri Mahadev temple, established by the ancestors of freedom fighter Ramanathan Nair, have come to a standstill and daily pujas have been disrupted. This has triggered a strong protest by Hindu organisations.

Interference in work started after traditional rituals

The repairs were started after the traditional rituals in the temple, when people associated with the SDPI intervened and threatened the Municipal Council Secretary. They demanded that the repairs be stopped, claiming that they were illegal. They did not stop there. A Police officer from the Special Branch telephoned the temple committee and threatened to stop the work. As the pressure increased, the Municipal Council Secretary finally locked the main gate of the temple and put up a board that reads, ‘This land belongs to the Municipal Council, unauthorized entry not allowed’.

Threats from outside activists

According to K. Prabhakaran, State Secretary of Hindu Aikyavedi Sanghatana, ‘The Municipal Council Secretary himself admitted that 4 SDPI activists had threatened him. They were not locals but had come from outside. The same group had earlier targeted Gopan Swami Samadhi. Police officers have also been threatened, and it has been revealed that a special branch officer had telephoned the temple committee to order them to stop the repairs.’

Unauthorized constructions ignored, only temples being targeted

Local devotees say that Hindus and Muslims in the area have been living in peace. Muslim citizens have also participated in festivals like Kanji Vejuthu in the temple. The tension created due to this is shocking to the locals. ‘Is this Afghanistan or Pakistan ?’, they have asked. They allege that the municipal council does not even touch many unauthorized constructions; but only this ancient temple is being targeted.

Suspicion of political support and continued agitation

Hindu organisations are expressing suspicion that all these actions are being supported by the ruling parties. They say that action against illegal constructions is also being taken selectively. While action is being taken against the temples, unauthorized settlements in areas like Thakkapalli remain intact.

In protest against these developments, various Hindu organisations including Hindu Aikyavedi have started a continuous agitation in the temple area. They have announced that the agitation will continue with chanting and continuous demonstrations until the temple is opened. They have also warned that if the lockdown is not lifted immediately, the Government will be held responsible for all the consequences.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Is Kerala in India or Pakistan ? It is shameful for Hindus that a Hindu temple is threatened by an Islamic political party and consequently locked.
  • It has now become necessary for Hindus to demand a ban on SDPI as well.
