“Had the Partition of India not taken place and Pakistan not been created, a Muslim would have become the Prime Minister of India !” : MLA Iqbal Mahmood

Samajwadi Party MLA Iqbal Mahmood’s statement in Sambhal (Uttar Pradesh)

Sambhal (Uttar Pradesh) – “If the Partition of India had not taken place and Pakistan had not been created, a Muslim would have surely become the Prime Minister of India. At present, there are around 30 to 32 crore Muslims in the country, yet we cannot even imagine that one of us could ever become the Prime Minister,” said Iqbal Mahmood, a seven-time elected MLA from the Samajwadi Party.

“We regret the day of Partition!” – MLA Iqbal Mahmood

Mahmood further said, “When the country gained independence, Muhammad Ali Jinnah was responsible for the division of India. Those who loved India stayed here, while those who wanted to associate themselves with Jinnah went to Pakistan. We curse that day, because our current condition would have been very different had that not happened. If Pakistan had not separated, we too would have been contenders for the Prime Minister’s post, and a Prime Minister would have emerged from our community as well.”

Editorial Perspectives

  • In nine Indian States, Hindus are a minority — in such places, a Hindu can never become Chief Minister. Yet Muslims dream of becoming the Prime Minister; this is worth noting !
  • Not just the post of Prime Minister — observing the condition of Muslims in Pakistan and Bangladesh, Muslims in India have now begun to realise India’s true worth, and such statements arise out of that realisation !
  • If Partition had not happened, it would have resulted in an undivided India — and the Prime Minister would still have been a Hindu; this must be understood !
