Editing of some stanzas of ‘Vande Mataram’ in 1937 sowed the seeds of India’s partition : Prime Minister Narendra Modi

The divisive ideology of that era continues to challenge the nation, says PM Modi

New Delhi – ‘Vande Mataram’ is not just a song but a mantra, a dream, a resolve, and a source of energy. It is a hymn in praise of Mother India and a declaration of India’s freedom. However, in 1937, some stanzas of ‘Vande Mataram’ were edited and the song was fragmented. That very act of division sowed the seeds of the nation’s partition. The same divisive ideology of that time continues to pose a challenge even today, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The national song ‘Vande Mataram’ completed 150 years on 7th November. PM Modi made these remarks while addressing a gathering organised in New Delhi on the same day.

The Prime Minister further stated, “The original text of ‘Vande Mataram’ portrays Bharat Mata as Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Durga. When enemies dared to attack India’s security and honour through terrorism, the world witnessed India’s power to annihilate terrorism in the form of Goddess Durga.”
