India will become the next superpower alongside US and China : Finnish President

Statement by Finnish President Alexander Stubb supporting India’s membership in the UN Security Council

Helsinki (Finland) – I am a great admirer of India, and I am sure that India will become the next global superpower alongside the US and China. It is essential to give India a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. If India is not given this seat, the power and credibility of the United Nations will continue to decline, said Finnish President Alexander Stubbs. While many countries, including Russia and Britain, are openly supporting India’s membership, China is opposing it.

India maintains balanced relations with all major nations

In an interview with the news website ‘Firstpost’, Stubb said,

1. India is currently building equal and positive relations with all major nations, rather than being tied to any one power in the world, and this stance is very appropriate. Given India’s size, capabilities, and international influence, what it does has a far-reaching impact on world affairs.

2. India’s role in the global order needs to be enhanced through multilateral cooperation. I have said this twice in the United Nations General Assembly that the Security Council should be expanded. Its membership should be at least doubled. It is very wrong that a country like India does not yet have a permanent membership.

We should elect 1 member from South America, 2 from Africa and 2 from Asia; because I believe in multilateralism. If India is not given a place in the Security Council, this world body will become even weaker.

China opposes

India and the G4 countries (India, Japan, Germany and Brazil) have been continuously demanding reforms in the Security Council; but China is opposing these changes.

China fears that if India becomes a member, China’s power and influence in Asia will be reduced; hence it is creating obstacles in India’s path to get UNSC permanent membership. Accordingly, Pakistan is conducting a campaign against India at China’s behest.
