Washington, DC (USA) – US President Donald Trump has warned that if the Nigerian government fails to stop the killings of innocent Christians, the United States will not only cut off financial aid to Nigeria but also take military action. Trump issued this threat through a post on the social media platform Truth Social.
Department of War ordered to prepare for action
Trump has reportedly ordered the US Department of War to be ready for possible military action. He warned, ‘If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! (sic)’. ‘The United States will no longer just talk; we will act’, he added.
America will not remain silent while Christians are persecuted worldwide
Trump earlier announced that he had declared Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ because of the ‘existential threat’ posed to its Christian population. He said that thousands of Christians have been killed in what he described as a systematic genocide orchestrated by radical Islamist forces. ‘The United States will not remain silent while Christians are persecuted across the globe. Concrete steps will now be taken, he added, also directing US lawmakers to investigate the matter.
Nigeria denies allegations; ‘No organised persecution of any religious community’
Following Trump’s warning, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu dismissed the allegations, stating that no religious community in Nigeria faces organised persecution.
Nigeria’s Information Minister Mohammed Idris said, ‘The US’ accusations are misleading. Nigeria remains committed to maintaining peace and interfaith harmony’.
Background of the issue
In Nigeria, most farmers are Christians, while most cattle herders are Muslims. Frequent conflicts over water, land, and other resources often lead to attacks on Christians. Additionally, jihadi terrorist groups such as Boko Haram have carried out attacks on churches and Christian communities, killing many believers.
