Mumbai – The Union government has directed telecom operators to roll out the Calling Name Presentation (C.A.N.P.) service across the country. The move is expected to cut down nuisance calls from unknown numbers and curb scams and unsolicited commercial calls, because the name provided at the time of SIM purchase will now appear along with the number on a mobile phone’s caller screen.
1. Following recommendations from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the Union Government has instructed operators to activate the C.A.N.P. service. Operators must begin providing the service in at least one circle within the next seven days. Officials hope this will reduce unwanted promotional calls and fraudulent contacts appearing on users’ phones. The name registered by the customer at SIM purchase will be displayed alongside the calling number.
2. As per TRAI’s recommendations, C.A.N.P. will be introduced as a supplementary service within the Indian telecom network. All major operators — Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL and others — will be required to offer this facility to their subscribers.
