Imprisonment up to 7 years for practicing polygamy in Assam

Government issues notification

Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati (Assam) – According to a notification issued by the Assam Government, marrying more than once will now be considered a criminal offence in the State. Under this new law, a second marriage may attract imprisonment of up to seven years. The law will apply equally to citizens of all religions. The related bill will be presented during the winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly on 25th November.

Over 8,000 arrests in two years in child marriage cases

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that Assam will not allow second or third marriages under any circumstances. ‘We will protect the dignity of women and girls at all costs. This law will further strengthen our efforts toward women’s empowerment’, he said. He added that strict action has already been taken against child marriage—over 8,000 people have been arrested in the past two years. The anti-polygamy law will serve as another effective step in fighting such social evils.

Announcement of two-child policy

At a programme in Cachar District, Sarma also clarified that women with more than two children will not be eligible for government welfare schemes.

These schemes include the Chief Minister’s Women Entrepreneurship Mission, under which women can receive loans of up to ₹25,000 through self-help groups

Editorial Perspective

If such a law can be enacted in BJP-ruled Assam, why can’t it be implemented in other states and across the entire nation ? Nationalist citizens feel that other BJP-governed states should also introduce similar legislation.
