Delhi Court dismisses Adv. Mehmood Pracha’s petition seeking to declare the Ayodhya verdict invalid

  • Petitioner fined ₹6 lakh

  • Frivolous and an abuse of the judicial process : Judge Dharmendra Rana

New Delhi – Advocate Mehmood Pracha had filed a petition seeking to declare the 2019 Supreme Court verdict on the Ayodhya Ram Janmabhoomi case as invalid. The Delhi District Court recently dismissed the petition, upholding the earlier order of the civil Court which had also rejected the case. Moreover, the District Court increased the fine imposed on Pracha from ₹1 lakh to ₹6 lakh.

Key points from the judgement

1. In his petition, Advocate Mehmood Pracha claimed that former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, who was one of the five judges on the Supreme Court bench that delivered the Ayodhya verdict, had allegedly admitted in a speech last year that the Ayodhya judgement was based on guidance received from Shriram Lalla Virajman.

2. District Judge Dharmendra Rana termed Pracha’s lawsuit as ‘frivolous, misconceived, and an abuse of the judicial process’.

3. Judge Rana reviewed both the Ayodhya verdict and the excerpts from the former CJI’s speech, concluding that Justice Chandrachud’s reference to ‘praying before God’ was a spiritual reflection, not an acknowledgment of bias or external influence.

4. The judge clarified that Justice Chandrachud had not mentioned Shriram Lalla in his speech; rather, he prayed to God for wisdom and guidance while handling the sensitive Ayodhya dispute.

5. Judge Rana added that seeking divine guidance through personal faith does not amount to fraud under the law. The Court also noted that Advocate Pracha mischaracterised Justice Chandrachud by referring to him as ‘a friend of God’, which was incorrect and misleading.
