Islamabad: A few days ago, a border conflict erupted between Pakistan and Afghanistan, severely impacting Pakistan’s economy. With the closure of the border between the two countries, inflation has skyrocketed across Pakistan. Prices of essential commodities have shot up drastically — tomatoes are now selling at ₹600 per kg, nearly five times higher, while ginger is priced at ₹750 per kg.

1. Due to the ongoing conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan since October 11, all border gates along the 2,600-kilometer border between the two countries have been closed, bringing trade to a complete halt. Trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan typically includes fruits, vegetables, minerals, medicines, wheat, rice, sugar, meat, and dairy products.

2. Khan Jan Alokzai, head of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce in Kabul, stated that due to the suspension of trade, both countries are incurring daily losses of around $1 million (approximately ₹8.8 crore). Earlier, around 500 trucks of vegetables were exported daily, but that has now come to a halt. Currently, around 5,000 trucks loaded with goods are stuck on both sides of the border. As a result, the prices of tomatoes, apples, and grapes have skyrocketed.

3. In Rawalpindi, small vegetable vendors have stopped selling tomatoes, peas, ginger, and garlic due to soaring prices. Garlic is now being sold at ₹400 per kilogram, while onions are priced at ₹120 per kilogram.
