Kerala High Court dismisses petition against ‘Tantra Vidyalayas’

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – The Kerala High Court has ruled that being a temple priest is not a role restricted to any particular caste or lineage, and that such a requirement is not an essential religious practice. The Court dismissed a petition filed by the Akhil Kerala Tantri Samaj challenging the recognition granted to certain institutions as ‘Tantra Vidyalayas’ by the Travancore Devaswom Board and the Kerala Devaswom Recruitment Board.
According to the Court, the petitioners’ contention that the appointment of priests must strictly follow traditional lineage-based customs and cannot be modified by law or regulation, was unacceptable. The case arose after the Devaswom Board made it mandatory for applicants to temple priest positions (part-time Shantis) to possess a certificate from recognised Tantra Vidyalayas. The Tantri Samaj opposed this rule, arguing that only individuals trained by traditional priests could perform such roles.
Court rejects caste-based claim
The High Court dismissed the argument that only those trained in hereditary priestly families can become priests, stating that the claim lacked both factual and legal basis. It further clarified that allowing non-traditional individuals to perform priestly duties does not violate the petitioners’ fundamental rights under Articles 25 and 26 of the Constitution.
Tantra Vidyalaya courses aligned with Vedic tradition
The Court noted that the curriculum formulated by the Kerala Devaswom Board covers Vedic texts, religious rituals, worship procedures, and modes of prayer, taught by qualified scholars and Tantris (priests). These courses range from one to five years in duration. The Court observed that both the Travancore and Kerala Devaswom Boards have laid down rigorous institutional standards and verification processes before granting recognition to any Tantra Vidyalaya.
Editorial PerspectiveThe Kerala High Court’s ruling underscores that priesthood is based on spiritual competence, not birth or lineage — a stance aligned with the inclusive spirit of Sanatan Dharma. |
