Donald Trump threatens again to raise import duties on India

Washington (USA) – US President Donald Trump has once again threatened to increase import duties on India. He warned that if India does not stop importing oil from Russia, it could face heavy tariffs. Trump made the statement while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One during his foreign tour.

Trump said, “Prime Minister Modi had told me they would stop importing oil from Russia; but if they do not, substantial import duties will be imposed.” The Indian government, however, dismissed Trump’s claim of any discussion with Prime Minister Modi. On 15 October, speaking to journalists in the Oval Office at the White House, Trump claimed that he had discussed the matter with Prime Minister Modi, who had supposedly said that “India will gradually stop importing oil from Russia.” The Ministry of External Affairs clarified that no such telephone conversation had taken place between Modi and Trump.

India is a major importer of oil and natural gas. In the current volatile energy situation, protecting the interests of Indian consumers remains the government’s top priority, said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jayswal.
