Pakistan violates ceasefire; carries out airstrike on Afghanistan

Kabul / Islamabad – Pakistan, which had itself called for a ceasefire, violated it on 17th October by launching fresh airstrikes on Afghanistan. According to the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), the attack killed eight people, including three Afghan club-level cricketers, and injured seven civilians. The Taliban claimed that Pakistan carried out the strike in Paktika province, located along the Durand Line that marks the border between the two countries.

1. In response, Afghanistan announced its withdrawal from the upcoming trilateral T20 cricket series scheduled in Pakistan in November. The ACB said the decision was made to honour the memory of those killed. Teams from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka were to participate in the series.

2. According to Afghan news channel TOLO News, the airstrike targeted several houses in Argun and Barmal districts. However, there have been no confirmed civilian casualties reported from those specific strikes yet.

3. The Taliban Government in Afghanistan accused Pakistan of targeting civilian areas, while Pakistan maintained that the airstrikes were directed at terrorist hideouts.

4. The United Nations reported that 37 civilians were killed and 425 injured in Pakistani attacks carried out across six Afghan provinces this week.

Two TTP factions unite against Pakistan

Two factions of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operating from Afghanistan have announced an alliance against Pakistan. One faction is led by Mufti Abdur Rahman from Kurram District, and the other by Commander Sher Khan from Tirah Valley in Khyber District. Both commanders have pledged allegiance to the TTP.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif alleged on 17th October that decisions related to the Taliban are being made in New Delhi, and that Afghanistan is fighting a covert or ‘proxy war’ on behalf of India.
