Kerala – There is a place called ‘Pakistan Mukku’ in the limits of Kunnathuru Gram Panchayat in Pattanamthitta District. Since this was circulated on social media, people have been outraged and there is a demand to change the name of the place. ‘Mukku’ means ‘junction’ in Malayalam.
It is believed that a bus driver who came to this Muslim-majority area 7 decades ago jokingly said, “When you come here, you feel like you’re in Pakistan.” After that, the bus stop in the village came to be called ‘Pakistan Mukku’. The original name of this place was ‘Nirvatumukku’.
On May 21st, a resolution was passed to change the name of ‘Pakistan Mukku’ to ‘Iverkala Junction’. This was agreed to by the panchayat members of the CPI(M), Congress and BJP. Only one CPI(M) member opposed it. It was decided to submit a formal application to the State Government for the change of name; however, it is pending with the municipal board. After the terrorist attack on Hindus in Pahalgam in Kashmir, there was pressure to change the name of this place; however, no action was taken in this regard.
‘Operation Sindoor’ opposed in Kerala; but Pakistan’s name used with pride : Anoop Antony Joseph, State General Secretary, BJP

Expressing anger over this, BJP’s State General Secretary Anoop Antony Joseph said that after the road in the village was repaired, a board named ‘Pakistan Mukku’ was put up there. ‘Operation Sindoor’ is not welcomed in Kerala; but the name of Pakistan is proudly written on the board. Although the BJP tried to change this name, the communist Government refused.
Another ‘Pakistan Mukku’ in Kerala
There is another place called ‘Pakistan Mukku’ in Kallar Gram Panchayat in Thiruvananthapuram. Reportedly, there has been no demand from the people to change the name.
