Auspicious and Joyous Diwali

Diwali is from 17th to 23rd October 2025. Vasubaras and Bhaiyaduj precede and follow Diwali, and yet are separate festivals. Let us have a brief look at some of these days.

Vasubaras (Govatsadwadashi – 17th October)

In our Hindu culture, the festival of Diwali begins with the worship of a cow, whom we consider to be a Deity. This day is also known as Govatsa Dwadashi. On this day, Savats Dhenu i.e. a cow and her calf are worshipped. Savats Dhenu is a form of Mother Earth. Vasu means Earth. We dwell on Her; hence, it is a day to express gratitude unto Her. It shows affection, love and intimacy.

Dhantrayodashi (18th October)

To prevent untimely death, it is customary to offer Yamadeep on this day. In the evening, light a mud lamp facing the south and worship it with gandha, turmeric, akshata, flowers, incense, lamp and offerings. Dhanvantari Jayanti is also celebrated on this day to remember and express gratitude unto Adidev Dhanvantari, the Creator of various medicines, remover of the fear of diseases, old age and death and to whom not only humans, but all Deities and demons pay obeisance.

Narakchaturdashi (20th October)

Early in the morning, Abhyangasnan is done using fragrant oil and ubtan. It was on this day that Shrikrushna slayed demon Narakasur, who was troubling the Deities and the people; hence, this blissful moment was celebrated by lighting lamps everywhere.

Lakshmi Pujan (21st October)

We should recite the Richa 13 of Shrisukta to get rid of financial troubles and obtain riches. The intent of this Richa is – O’ Deity of Fire ! May Shrilakshmi, who has materialised from Kshirsagar on Ardra Nakshatra, anointed by an elephant trunk in a pond full of lotus flowers, an affirmer who pervades all living beings, who bestows delight like the Moon which wears reddish brown lotus garlands, who is bedecked with gold ornaments, come to my house and dwell here forever. May Shri Vishnu’s wife Shri Lakshmi give us wisdom, inspiration and get good deeds performed through us.

Spiritual meaning of Diwali

By killing Narkasur, Bhagawan Shrikrushna freed people from the attitude of indulgence in worldly pleasures, jealousy, unrighteousness and negative attitudes. He made them happy by giving Divine thoughts, which is what Diwali is all about.
