Stray dogs bite foreigner coaches at the world championship event in Delhi

New Delhi – During the world para-athletic championship  event here at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, two foreign coaches,  Kenyan coach Dennis Mwanzo and Japanese assistant coach Meiko Okumatsu were bitten by stray dogs in two separate incidents. (Those responsible for these attacks must be given stringent punishment. – Editor). Both are receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital. After these incidents Delhi Municipal Corporation has deployed two full time squads to control stray dogs. Other vehicles to catch the stray dogs and take them to dog shelter, are kept ready.

1. Kenya team Dr Michael Okaro said, “Dennis was immediately taken to Safdarjung Hospital after the dog bite. He was given rabis injection.  Such incident during world championship is extremely serious. We are worried about Dennis.”

2. Japanese coach Okumatsu said, “Luckily, after the dog bite, I was given prompt medical treatment by the doctors.

3. The organisers of the Championship event reported, “The incident occurred because some people feed stray dogs at the site of competition.” (Despite directive by the Supreme Court against such feeding, doesn’t the administration notice dogs being fed at public places ? – Editor)

8 lakh stray dogs in Delhi

According to Government census 25,210 dog-bite incidents were registered in 2024. In the year 2023 the number was 17,847. This year in January itself dog-bite incidents have reached the number 3,200. Currently there are 8 lakh stray dogs in Delhi. (If the number of stray dogs is so large, how and when will the administration find a solution? – Editor)
