Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) – Illegal religious conversions of Hindu children are reportedly underway in 27 madarasas in Madhya Pradesh. A complaint filed with the National Human Rights Commission alleges that 556 Hindu children are being targeted to adopt Islam. Taking serious note of the matter, the Commission has asked the Principal Secretary of the Education Department to submit a response within 15 days. It has also demanded that a criminal case be registered.

The complaint mentions that madarasas in areas such as Morena, Islampura, and Jaura are violating the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. The Commission’s letter questions how Hindu children are being enrolled in madarasas when these institutions do not fall under the legal framework of formal education. It also levels serious allegations of madarasas receiving illegal foreign funding and having links to anti-national elements.

State funding to madarasas must be stopped immediately – NHRC

Commission member Priyank Kanoongo stated that madarasas are not educational institutions but centres for religious instruction. The issue of Hindu children being taught the Quran has persisted for years. Since running madarasas is not a function of the Government, all grants to them must be discontinued with immediate effect. The Commission is prepared to take strict action in this matter.

Editorial Perspectives

  • When it is well known that madarasas teach the Quran, how are Hindu parents still sending their children there ? This exposes the urgent need to raise awareness and provide Dharma education among Hindus.
  • Despite legal prohibitions on admitting Hindu students to madarasas, those allowing such admissions must be jailed.
