Sonia Gandhi attacks Modi over Israel ties, demands India lead in resolving Palestine issue

New Delhi – India’s position on the Israel-Palestine conflict is extremely disappointing. The Government’s silence amounts to a betrayal of both humanity and morality. It signals a serious departure from India’s long-standing foreign policy. This shift appears to be influenced by the personal friendship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Foreign policy should not be dictated by personal ties. India must take initiative to resolve the Palestine issue, demanded Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, sharply criticising the Union Government.

Sonia Gandhi further stated that more than 150 of the world’s 193 countries, including France, Britain, Canada, Portugal and Australia, have recognised Palestine as a sovereign state. This move is a historic step towards fulfilling the dreams of the long-suffering Palestinian people. While the world stands with Palestine, India has recently signed an investment agreement with Israel and welcomed ministers from their far-right political faction. These actions are being criticised internationally. The Palestine issue is not merely a matter of foreign policy for India but also a question of moral and civilisational responsibility.

Editorial Perspective

Not once has Sonia Gandhi urged the Government to take initiative to resolve the plight of displaced Hindus in Kashmir. Yet she appears deeply concerned for Muslims who support Hamas, a terrorist organisation in Palestine.
