US-based devout Hindu leader Purnima Nath receives threats

Nath files complaints with US intelligence agencies, the Indian Embassy in the US, and India’s External Affairs Minister

Milwaukee (USA) – ‘I am reporting repeated harassment and intimidation received through social media – specifically targeting me as a Brown Hindu Indian American. The threats include pressure of forced conversion, humiliation, and fear tactics invoking government statements. Purnima Nath, a Republican Party leader, geopolitical analyst, and devout Hindu, posted on her account on X (formerly Twitter). She posted this, addressing the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), America’s intelligence agency. In a thread (a series of related posts), she also shared the threats she has received.

Nath further wrote,

1. I am deeply concerned for my own safety, for others like me, and for the broader minority community.

2. If, as a Hindu and a person of Indian descent, I do not have the right to freedom of religion, life, speech, expression, and thought in America, I ask for clarity on that point.

3. Addressing (by tagging) the Indian Embassy in the US and India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, Nath wrote, ‘I am also notifying the Indian Embassy for situational awareness, and to ask whether they have guidance or assistance for community members facing organised harassment or threats in the U.S.’.

4. In this post, she also tagged US-based organisations such as Hindu Hate, Hindu American Foundation, HinduACT, as well as Indian devout Hindu media outlets like Prachyam and Sanatan Prabhat.

Political rhetoric in America has increased both Hinduphobia and India-hate: Purnima Nath

In another post addressed to Hindus worldwide – in the US, India, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, and beyond – Purnima Nath wrote, ‘We are witnessing a disturbing rise in #Hinduphobia, harassment, and targeted violence against Hindus, Browns, and Indian-origin communities in the West. This situation has escalated quickly. Our rights, safety, and dignity are at stake. We must stand together, raise our voices, and act collectively to confront and stop this wave of hatred. Regardless of political alignment, every Hindu should have the basic right to exist, express, and think freely without fear of being harmed. Yet political rhetoric in America has fueled both Hinduphobia and India-hate. Please amplify this call.

In this message, Nath used hashtags such as #HindusUnderAttackInAmerica and #RisingHinduphobiaInTheWest.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Because she is an unapologetic Hindu – a devout and proud Hindu – a Hindu woman is being threatened in America. This reveals the dismal state of American democracy. India’s Ministry of External Affairs must now hold the US accountable on this matter!
  • If this is the plight for the safety of a thinker and political leader in America, then one can imagine the situation of ordinary Hindus living there.
