Bengaluru (Karnataka) – In Dakshina Kannada, traditional programmes such as Yakshagana, Kola, Rathotsava, and Nemotsava have been held for many years. However, during this year’s Janmashtami celebrations, Police seized loudspeaker systems and registered cases against the organisers. BJP MLA Vedavyas Kamath raised the issue in the Karnataka Assembly on 20th August, alleging that such incidents never occurred during the BJP’s tenure, but ever since Congress came to power, obstacles to Hindu traditions have been increasing. As soon as BJP raised the matter, Congress MLAs created a commotion in the Assembly.

Speaker UT Khader remarked that a balance must be maintained between tradition and law, adding that even the BJP had earlier demanded a ban on loudspeakers in mosques.

Editorial Perspectives

  • For Hindu festivals, organisers duly obtain Police permission to use loudspeaker systems. Yet, in most cases, mosques install and operate loudspeakers without permission or in violation of regulations.
  • Why should the Hindu majority in the country be compelled to hear the Muslim Azaan (call to prayer), which explicitly declares that ‘there is no God but Allah’ ?
  • The Congress Government, while seizing loudspeakers used during Hindu religious festivals, refrains from taking similar action against mosque loudspeakers. Hindus who voted Congress into power, despite such blatant bias, ought to find this situation deeply shameful.
