Every Fourth Person in the World is Now a Muslim

Report by America’s Pew Research Centre reveals alarming demographic trends

New Delhi – Islam has emerged as the fastest-growing religion in the world, according to a comprehensive report by the Pew Research Centre, a reputed think tank based in the United States. The data reveals that the global Muslim population rose from 1.7 billion in 2010 to 2 billion in 2020 – a staggering 21% increase in just a decade. In contrast, the overall global population grew by only 10% during the same period.

As a result of this rapid expansion, Muslims now account for 26% of the world’s population, up from 24% a decade ago. Simply put, every fourth person in the world today is a Muslim. Significantly, the Muslim population is growing at twice the rate of other religious groups.

Historical Perspective: Muslim Population Over 100 Years

In 1900, the global Muslim population was approximately 200 million, just 12% of the world’s population at the time. However, due to persistently high birth rates in Muslim-majority countries, this figure has surged over the past century. By 2025, it is projected to reach 25%, and according to Pew’s estimates, the number will increase to 2.2 billion by 2030 and 2.8 billion by 2050, accounting for nearly 30% of the world’s population.

Where Do Most Muslims Live?

  • Asia-Pacific region: 59% of the world’s Muslims reside here.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa: 18% of the global Muslim population lives in this region.
  • Indonesia : Home to the largest number of Muslims, approximately 240 million (12% of the global Muslim population).
  • India: With around 213 million Muslims, India has the second-largest Muslim population, accounting for about 15% of its total population.

Notable Demographic Shifts in Specific Countries:

  1. Kazakhstan: The Muslim population grew by 8%, largely due to the emigration of Christian residents.
  2. Lebanon: An Increase is attributed to the influx of Syrian refugees.
  3. Oman: Saw an 8% decline in Muslim population due to a rise in foreign non-Muslim workers.
  4. Tanzania: The Muslim population decreased by 6% due to falling birth rates.
  5. Europe: Muslim numbers are rising steadily due to both migration and high fertility rates.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Given the current exponential growth rate, it is not far-fetched to imagine a future where every second person on the planet may be a Muslim.
  • In India, the ongoing conspiracy of ‘population jihad’ is already altering the nation’s demographic structure. Hence, if India were to become an Islamic country in the future, it should not come as a surprise to anyone paying attention to these trends.
