Tel Aviv (Israel) – While the world is still discussing India’s Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has now announced the launch of ‘Operation Rising Lion’ against Iran. Early morning on 13th June (IST), Israel conducted airstrikes on multiple military bases in Tehran, the capital of Iran, specifically targeting nuclear facilities. These strikes destroyed Iran’s nuclear energy infrastructure and a missile manufacturing facility. Iran has admitted that its Natanz nuclear site was destroyed — a site where uranium enrichment was underway. Iran had been attempting to develop a nuclear bomb through this enrichment process. According to reports from several Iranian state media outlets, General Hossein Salami, Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of the Iranian Armed Forces, were both killed in the attack. Additionally, Dr Mohammad Tehranchi and Dr Fereydoon Abbasi, two prominent Iranian nuclear scientists, also died. In a national address, Prime Minister Netanyahu declared that the operation would not stop until ‘the threat to Israel is completely neutralised’.

Benjamin Netanyahu announces the Operation to the World

Prime Minister Netanyahu released a video statement, informing the global community about the strikes on Iran. He said, ‘Moments ago, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion. For decades, Iran’s authoritarian regime has spoken openly about Israel’s destruction. To achieve this, it pursued a nuclear weapons programme and produced highly enriched uranium. This campaign has been launched to eliminate the Iranian threat to Israel’s very existence. This operation will continue until that threat is fully removed’.

International Atomic Energy Agency confirms the attacks

Reports suggest that Iran suffered substantial losses from the Israeli airstrikes on its military and nuclear installations. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has also confirmed the attacks.

Israel and the US will pay a heavy price : Iran

Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi, spokesperson for Iran’s military, issued a strong warning during a national news interview, saying, “We will deliver a fitting response to Israel’s attack’. He accused Israel of carrying out the attack with US assistance and warned that both nations would have to pay a heavy price for it.

Iran retaliates

In retaliation to Israel’s attack, Iran launched an offensive using over 100 drones. It is currently unclear how much damage Israel suffered or how many of Iran’s drones were intercepted and destroyed by Israeli air defence. Iran has named its retaliatory operation ‘Operation To Promise’.

India issues Advisory for Indian nationals in Israel

Following Israel’s military actions, the Government of India, through its Embassy in Israel, issued safety guidelines for Indian citizens living there : ‘In view of the prevailing situation in the region, all Indian nationals in Israel are advised to stay vigilant and adhere to the safety protocols as advised by the Israeli authorities and home front command (https://oref.org.il/eng). Please exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel within the country and stay close to safety shelters’.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Considering the global scenario, it appears the world is rapidly heading toward World War 3. In such times, the Indian Government must prepare itself and ensure its citizens are also ready.
  • Israel does not wait for an attack from its enemies—it enters enemy territory and strikes first. While offence is the best defence, only by adopting such a proactive strategy will India command respect and prevent any adversary from daring to challenge it !
