Washington (USA) – According to data released by Pew Research Center, from 2010 to 2020, the global Muslim population increased rapidly, while the Hindu population remained stable. In this decade, the Muslim population grew by 347 million, reaching 1.946 billion. In the same period, the Hindu population rose by 126 million, bringing the total to 1.158 billion. Globally, the percentage share of Hindus remains around 15, as it was earlier.

1. Christians still form the largest religious group in the world. Over the past 10 years, their population grew by 122 million to reach 2.29 billion. However, their share of the world’s population dropped from 30 percent to 28 percent.

2. In 2010, there were 1.13 billion atheists, which rose to 1.4 billion by 2020. Their global share increased from 16.4 percent to 18.2 percent.

3. The number of Buddhists worldwide declined by 19 million, reducing their population to 324 million. Jews continue to have the smallest global religious population, increasing from 14 million to 15 million, keeping their share at just 0.2 percent.

Editorial Perspectives

  • The reasons behind the rapid rise in the global Muslim population are too obvious to state. At the same time, a major reason for the decline in Christian numbers is their own abandonment of their religion. Christian missionaries in India must reflect upon this.
  • As the number of atheists goes up worldwide, it is essential to study which religions they originally belonged to.
