1. The sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court is 34 judges, out of which 33 are currently serving, with one position vacant. Of these, 30 judges have submitted their asset details to the court; however, these details have not yet been made public.
2. A fresh controversy has emerged following the seizure of a large sum of cash from the residence of Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Verma.
3. In 2009, the Judges’ Declaration of Assets and Liabilities Bill was introduced in Parliament. It proposed that judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts declare their assets, but included a clause stating that these declarations would not be made public. This provision drew criticism and ultimately led to the bill being withdrawn.
4. In 2009, in response to growing demands for transparency under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, some judges voluntarily made their asset details public.
5. Justice Yashwant Verma, who is embroiled in the cash seizure case, has been transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court. However, the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court has been instructed not to assign any judicial responsibilities to Justice Verma.
