Teaching Telugu Mandatory in Telangana : Directive by Congress Govt

Hyderabad (Telangana) – The Congress Government ruling Telangana State, has made Telugu language compulsory and the state education department has issued an order to that effect. This directive is applicable to all schools including schools affiliated to CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education – Central Secondary Education Board), ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education – Indian Secondary Education Certificate), and International Baccalaureate  (IB). The new  rule will be implemented from the 2025-26 educational year for the ninth standard students and from the 2026-27 educational year for the tenth standard students. Most of the schools in Telangana are run by the State Government where teaching Telugu is common; but schools run under education boards outside the State mostly don’t teach Telugu.

1.Telangana Government has made teaching Telugu mandatory when the neighbouring State Tamil Nadu is opposing the national education policy as there is a feeling of forcing students to learn Hindi.

2.An education expert stated that more than one-third schools have English as the medium of teaching in Telangana. This rule is an attempt to introduce students to their mother tongue. The students should be able to read and write in the local language.

Editorial Perspective

All schools and boards are required to teach Marathi in Maharashtra; however, many board schools teach Marathi as an optional subject. Maharashtra Government should also make Marathi, the State language, as a compulsory subject.
