Woman injected with HIV-positive needle for not fulfilling dowry demand in UP

  • Police delayed filing a case, citing ‘Family Matter’

  • Case registered only after Court’s intervention

Lucknow (UP) – A shocking incident has surfaced from Gangoh, Uttar Pradesh, where a woman was allegedly infected with HIV by her in-laws for failing to fulfil their dowry demands. The victim’s medical reports revealed that she was forcibly made to consume harmful drugs and injected with an HIV-positive needle, leading to her contracting AIDS. The victim’s father repeatedly approached the Police, even reaching out to the Superintendent of Police, but no case was registered against the in-laws. Eventually, he filed a petition in Court, which then ordered the Police to register a case. The in-laws have now been booked for dowry harassment, assault, and deliberately infecting the woman with HIV.

Key allegations in the victim’s father’s complaint

1. The victim married a man named Abhishek on 15th February, 2023, in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.

2. The bride’s family gave dowry worth Rs 42 lakh, but the in-laws were not satisfied and demanded an additional Rs 25 lakh and a luxury car.

3. The woman was sent back to her parental home three times, and each time, she was sent back to her in-laws with the help of elders (Panchayat).

4. She was mentally harassed and taunted for tarnishing the name of her in-laws’ family and not fulfilling the dowry demand.

5. In May 2024, Abhishek and his sister allegedly forced her to consume harmful drugs and injected her with an HIV-positive needle, causing internal organ damage. She was then confined inside the house.

6. The victim escaped at the first opportunity and returned to her parental home.

7. Her father approached local Police and even the Senior Superintendent of Police in Saharanpur, but all officials refused to act, citing it as a “family matter.”

8. Finally, the father filed a petition in the local Court. On 6th February, the Court directed Gangoh Kotwali Police to register a case against Abhishek, his family members, and others involved.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Despite the existence of anti-dowry laws, such oppressive incidents continue to occur, raising the question of whether people still fear the law.
  • Strict action should also be taken against the Police officer who delayed filing a case against those responsible for ruining the woman’s life by injecting her with a HIV-positive needle.
