We are not neutral about Russia-Ukraine war – PM Modi
I have always been in contact with Russia and Ukraine and met leaders of both the countries. The world somehow feels India has been neutral in the Russia-Ukraine war. We are, however, on the side of peace, responded PM Modi to a question asked by reporters. He further stated that he had said while talking to the media in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin that it is not time for war. Conflicts cannot be solved on battlefields and dialogue and diplomacy is the only way to bring peace. A solution can be found only when Russia and Ukraine come to the table. Modi is hopeful of ending the Russia-Ukraine war with the initiative taken by Trump.
In the same context, Trump stated that the role of China is also important in solving the Russia-Ukraine war. He had good relations with China before Covid epidemic. China is an important country in the world. China, India and America can work together.

Trump agreed for extradition of Tahawwur Rana, an accused in 2008 terrorist attack on Mumbai and announced his decision in the press conference, besides indicating more such extraditions in future. He said that one of the evilest persons (Tahawwur Rana) would be immediately sent to India. Many requests were received in this respect (from New Delhi). America wanted to work with India against crimes and wanted to improve conditions in India.
On 21.01.2025, America’s Supreme Court dismissed a petition opposing extradition of Rana. Rana is presently detained in a prison at Los Angeles.

PM Modi was asked if discussions were held with Trump about the case filed in America against industrialist Gautam Adani. PM Modi answered that India is a democratic country and our culture teaches us to consider the world as one family. We treat the whole world as a family. I feel every Indian is my family member. Two highest leaders of two countries never discuss such personal matters.

A case has been filed in America against Adani for trying to bribe Indian officers about Rs 2100 crores to create favourable conditions for getting contracts for solar energy agreements. On Trump becoming the President, the Law Department was directed to stop implementation of an old law used to investigate the Adani group.
India dismisses proposal of mediation in issues against China
PM Modi and Trump had discussions even on the Indo-China border issues. Trump stated in the press conference that there are always fierce clashes on the Indo-China border and he felt that they would go on. He would be pleased to offer help in this context since it has been going on for many years and it is very fierce. India’s external affairs ministry secretary Vikram Mistry assured that all the issues with India’s neighbouring countries would be resolved through bilateral discussions.
India is ready for discussions on tariffs – Trump
Regarding the import duty on American goods sent to India, Trump stated that PM Modi has announced reduction in unjust and additional import duty with good faith. It is a big problem. India levies 30-40-60 and even 70% tax on many goods; in fact, in some cases, it is even more than that; e.g. charging 70% tax on cars coming from America to India makes sale of cars almost impossible. Today, the trade deficit of India with America is nearly $100 billions and PM Modi and I agree to have discussions on this very old issue for removing inequality and differences. We can easily make up for this deficit through sale of oil and gas and LNG. We have the largest LNG products in the world compared to other countries. India and America have made an important contract under which America will be the main supplier of oil and gas to India. India is trying to amend the laws to welcome America for expanding civil nuclear technology in India. It will benefit millions of Indians to get safe, clean and affordable electricity and it will boost the American civil nuclear industry.
Attempts to bring pressure on PM Modi
President Trump has signed a plan of charging reciprocal import duty with its trade partners before meeting PM Modi. As per this policy, America will charge a similar import duty on the products of all other countries as the other countries charge on American products.
