Massive crowd of devotees gathered at Sangam Ghat for the holy dip

Prayagraj, 12.2.2025 – On Magha Purnima, a staggering 1.5 crore devotees bathed at the Triveni Sangam and various other ghats during Maha Kumbha. The crowd extended up to 10 km from the Sangam Kshetra.

As a mark of devotion and celebration, 25 quintals of flowers were showered from helicopters on the pilgrims at Sangam Kshetra. Due to strict vehicle restrictions in both Maha Kumbha Kshetra and the city, devotees had to walk 8-10 km to reach the Sangam.

Traffic diversions and security arrangements

After severe traffic congestion on roads leading to Prayagraj, the traffic plan was revised. Paramilitary forces were deployed at Sangam, and most devotees were redirected to alternative ghats for bathing.

For the first time, a large administrative team has been deployed for crowd management, including:

  • 15 District Magistrates
  • 20 IAS officers
  • 85 PCS officers

In Lucknow, CM Yogi Adityanath personally monitored Maha Kumbha from the war room at his residence from 4 AM.

Sanitation and crowd management

The auspicious bathing period on Magha Purnima lasted until 7:22 PM. To ensure a smooth exit for devotees, authorities temporarily closed access to Letey Hanuman Temple, Akshayavat, and the Digital Maha Kumbha Centre.

Anuj Kumar Jha, Secretary of the Urban Development Department, stated:

  • 15,000+ sanitation workers were deployed in the Kumbha Mela area.
  •  8,000 workers were stationed across the city.
  •  Over 1.5 lakh toilets were being continuously cleaned to ensure hygiene for
    devotees.

Authorities also urged pilgrims not to litter and to maintain the cleanliness of Maha Kumbha Kshetra.
