Dhaka (Bangladesh) – The interim Government of Bangladesh may involve China in the proposed multipurpose project for the conservation and management of the Teesta River. This move could pose a serious security threat to India. The Teesta River originates in Sikkim and flows through parts of Northern West Bengal, covering approximately 305 km before entering Bangladesh. The Teesta project has long been a point of contention between India and Bangladesh; however, the Sheikh Hasina Government had previously kept China away from this project.

How does this threaten India ?
A retired Indian military officer has said that the decision to include China in the Teesta-related project is a significant security concern. The point where the river enters Bangladesh from India (near Mekhliganj in Cooch Behar) is just 100 km from the ‘Siliguri Corridor’. It appears that Bangladesh is trying to create further complications for India.
What is the ‘Chicken Neck’ ?
The Siliguri Corridor is referred to as India’s ‘Chicken Neck’. It is the narrowest stretch of land in the Indian subcontinent, located between Nepal and Bangladesh, and it connects the entire northeastern region of India with the rest of the country.
