India raises objections over shackling of illegal immigrants
New Delhi – The United States has provided a list of 487 additional Indian immigrants. Of these, 298 individuals have been instructed to be investigated. The final orders for deporting all these illegal Indian immigrants have been issued, as per India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day visit to the United States starting 12th February, where he will meet President Donald Trump. He will be in France from February 10 to 12.
1. Referring to the news that 104 Indians were sent back with shackles on their hands and feet, Vikram Misri said that India has raised objections with the US regarding the shackling of Indian immigrants. This could have been avoided. The United States should have shown more humane behaviour. India’s clear position is that no mistreatment should occur with illegal immigrants during future deportations from the US.
2. Misri further mentioned that India is relying on the data provided by the United States. Illegal immigration is like cancer; it must be stopped.
3. To prevent human trafficking and fraud under the guise of overseas employment, the Union Government is set to introduce a new law. This new law will replace the 42-year-old Passport Act. Discussions on this draft are ongoing in various ministries and with the Standing Committee affiliated with the Ministry of External Affairs. Suggestions and objections will be invited, and the bill may be presented in the Budget session. Those found violating the law will face imprisonment for 5 to 7 years and a fine of ₹5,00,000. If women and children are targeted, the punishment maybe 7 to 10 years in prison and a fine ranging from ₹15 lakh to ₹20 lakh.
