Some of President Trump’s policies may be ‘out of syllabus’ for India : Dr S Jaishankar

New Delhi – ‘US President Donald Trump is a nationalist. He believes that for the past 80 years, the US has taken on the responsibility of the entire world in a sense which has been unproductive. His mindset is that the expenditure the US makes should be spent within the US. From our perspective, India has good relations with the US. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shares a personal rapport with President Trump. Some of Trump’s policies may be out of syllabus for India’, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said while speaking during an interactive session with students at Hansraj College, Delhi University. Dr Jaishankar shared these insights when one of the students asked about the US.

Stance on US policies

Dr Jaishankar acknowledged that many of Trump’s policies could bring significant changes in global developments. ‘He will change many things, and some may be out of syllabus; however, from the perspective of national interest, we must conduct a foreign policy out of syllabus too. There may be some issues in which we may think differently, but there would be many areas where both the countries would have shared interests’, Dr Jaishankar said.

Even non-Indians now identify as Indians

Dr Jaishankar spoke about India’s growing global influence, saying that even non-Indians now identify as Indians. ‘Indians living abroad still depend on India for assistance. The one who leaves the country is the one who comes to us. We are the guardians abroad’, he added.
