Washington DC (USA) – Following an order from US President Donald Trump, a temporary halt has been placed on the aid provided to Pakistan, and this aid is set to be re-evaluated. As a result of this order, five energy-related projects in Pakistan have been stalled. Additionally, numerous other projects related to health, agriculture, food security, floods, climate, and education have also been halted. Some of these projects may be permanently discontinued. Over the past 20 years, the US has provided Pakistan with $32 billion in financial aid.
1. In 2023, the US provided approximately ₹3.89 lakh crore in aid to 158 countries; however, following Trump’s order, all types of foreign aid have been suspended for 90 days until a review of foreign policy is completed.
2. Currently, Pakistan has only $16 billion in foreign reserves left. In September 2024, Pakistan’s Government received $7 billion in aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). At the same time, the IMF revised Pakistan’s projected growth rate for 2025 to a mere 3%.
Aid to Bangladesh and Nepal also halted
Like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal were also recipients of significant US financial aid. According to December 2024 data, Bangladesh received $490 million in aid. Bangladesh depends on the US for food, education, security, and development.
Nepal is the 19 th country globally to receive US aid for its development projects. The US provides aid to Nepal in sectors such as health, education, agriculture, development, economic growth, human assistance, and women and child welfare. Nepal has also been hit by Trump’s order.
