Sharp decline in number of corruption cases in Maharashtra, 713 cases recorded

  • Nashik ranks first in corruption cases, Mumbai records a notable drop

  • Revenue Department most corrupt, followed by the Police Department

Mumbai – The number of corruption cases registered with the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has seen a sharp decline. This year, the ACB recorded 713 cases of corruption across the State. Nashik reported the highest number of cases, while Mumbai saw a significant drop. Pune ranks second after Nashik. Of the 713 cases, 678 were related to bribery, and 31 involved the accumulation of disproportionate assets. Since 2014, a steady decline in corruption cases has been observed.

1. Among the 678 bribery cases, 993 individuals were arrested, and bribes amounting to Rs 3.18 crore were seized. The highest number of offenders are from the Revenue Department, with 180 cases resulting in the arrest of 252 individuals.

2. The Police Department ranks second in terms of corruption cases.

3. In cities like Thane, Nagpur, Amravati, and Sambhajinagar, a total of 419 individuals were arrested for corruption-related offenses.

Editorial Perspectives

  • A decline in registered cases does not necessarily imply a reduction in corruption. Fear of corrupt politicians or administrative officials among various social groups often prevents people from filing complaints. Thus, not all instances of corruption are reported.
  • Corruption can only be eradicated through strict punishment for the guilty.
