30 Hindus Arrested in Bangladesh in Connection with Advocate Saiful’s Murder

Widespread raids targeting Hindus lead to mass arrests

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Advocate Saiful was murdered during a peaceful protest by Hindus in Chittagong against the arrest of Chinmoy Prabhu. Holding Hindus responsible for the killing, the police have launched a crackdown, arresting more than 30 Hindus, including six lawyers. They are accused of inciting people to vandalize property. The police actions have created an atmosphere of fear among the Hindu community.

Threats of Retaliation by Muslims in Chittagong

A young resident of Hazarilane, Chittagong, reported that Muslims are openly brandishing weapons and threatening retaliation. A Hindu resident from a predominantly Hindu area in Chittagong revealed that police raids began on the night of November 26. Accompanied by radical Muslim youths, the police targeted homes identified by these youths, who marked them and directed the raids.

After Sheikh Hasina’s government was overthrown, these radicals initially targeted members of the Awami League. With the new government nearly eliminating Awami League supporters, their focus has now shifted to Hindus.

Potential for Escalation Due to Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP Meetings

Jamaat-e-Islami and the Bangladesh National Party (BNP), led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, held multiple meetings in various cities on November 27. In response to the Chittagong incident, these parties have planned retaliatory measures, including intensifying attacks in Hindu-majority areas. They are also pressuring the Yunus government to take strict action, raising fears of increased violence and further arrests.
