Children under the age of 16 banned from using social media in Australia

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese

Canberra (Australia) – Australian Government has taken a decision that children under 16 years cannot use social media. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made the announcement in a press conference. He said that social media is harming the children, and it is about time that it is banned. However, he did not mention the specific social media platforms.

Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X etc. are the platforms banned for children under 16 yrs of age. Australian Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said, YouTube could be banned too. So far, not a single social media establishment has reacted to this.

A motion to enact a law in this regard will be tabled in the parliament this year. When the law is enacted the age limit will be implemented. Once the Act comes to force, the establishments will be responsible to ensure that children under the age of 16 do not use social media.
