Child sexual abuse uncovered in 20 Islamic welfare homes in Malaysia

402 children rescued, 171 arrested

Kuala Lumpur – The Malaysian Police have raided 20 ‘Islamic Welfare Homes’ and rescued 402 children, aged 1 to 17, who have been the victims of sexual abuse. The children, including 201 boys and 201 girls, were in facilities run by the Islamic business group named ‘Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISB)’. Inspector General of Police Razauddin Hussain reported the arrest of 171 individuals, including 105 women. The investigation revealed that the children were coerced into committing abuses against each other. Among the arrested are religious teachers responsible for the children’s education and care.

Police have suggested that ‘Global Ikhwan’ exploited children and leveraged religious sentiments to secure donations. Global Ikhwan, founded by religious leader Ashari Muhammad, operates branches in 20 countries, including China, UK and UAE.

Editorial Perspective

This incident is yet another proof that the Islamic institutions, including schools, madarasas, and mosques around the world have become the centres of sexual abuse.
