After nearly a year of violence between Maitei and Hamar communities, for the first time, both the communities agreed to maintain peace at least in Jiribam. On the morning of 1stAugust, in a meeting, a peace agreement was signed. During the meeting, it was decided that both the parties will cooperate with the security forces to prevent incidents of arson and shoot-out and will work towards normalising the situation.
After this agreement, on the night of 2ndAugust, some armed men torched a house in the village and opened fire. Following the incident, security forces have been deployed in the area. This year, in the month of June, a farmer’s dead body was found in a field in Jiribam, and violence had erupted. Due to arson from both sides, thousands of people had been forced leave their homes and move to camps.
