Peace agreement signed between Christian Kuki and Hindu Maitei

BJP Government’s efforts in Manipur yield success

New Delhi – Violence between the Christian Kuki and Hindu Maitei communities in Manipur has been ongoing since May last year. For the first time after almost a year of violence, the two communities have agreed to maintain peace in Jiribam district. This is said to be the first success of the Government while the BJP Government in Manipur has been criticised from all quarters for its failure to bring peace in the restive state.

1. A peace agreement was signed between the Meitei and Kuki factions on the morning of 1st August. The signing of this agreement by both sides has sent a message of peace to the entire state.

2. Under this agreement, both sides will cooperate with the security forces to prevent incidents of arson and firing in Jiribam district and work to restore the situation.

3. Central Reserve Police Force, Assam Rifles and District Commissioner were present in this meeting.

4. State Government sources said that at present we are limited to one district. Our ultimate goal is to restore peace and normalcy in the state.

5. Now the next meeting between the two parties will be held after 15th August.

6. Earlier, State Chief Minister Biren Singh had told the Assembly that the Government is working hard for peace talks and several talks have taken place in Silchar, which borders Assam’s Jiribam district. An announcement in this regard will be made soon.

A total of 226 people killed due to violence till date

A total of 226 people have died and 39 are missing due to the ongoing violence in the state since May 2023. 59,414 people are living in temporary camps. 11,133 houses have been burnt and 11,892 crimes have been registered in various police stations in connection with the violence.
