I regularly organise Durga Puja despite being a Muslim : Bengal Minister Firhad Hakim

Hakim had earlier said that ‘those who are not born in Islam, are unfortunate’

Firhad Hakim

Kolkata (Bengal) – Bengal State Government minister and Kolkata’s Mayor Firhad Hakim had stated in the last month that, ‘Those who are not born in Islam are unfortunate. We (Muslims) should bring them into Islam.’ After his statement drew criticism, he has now made a new claim in the Bengal Legislative Assembly on August 1. He said that despite being a Muslim, he has regularly been organising Durga Puja and Kali Puja.

Hakeem further said, “Whenever I stand up (in the assembly) to answer a question, BJP MLAs walk out of the House. What can I do if any of my comments are misinterpreted ? Do BJP members consider me secular or not ? I have never insulted people of any other religion and will never do so till my last breath. It was not my intention to hurt anyone. I was born in a secular family and will remain secular in future.” (If that is the case, Hakim should also give a dose of secularism to the Muslims of Bengal and protect the Hindus there, otherwise his claims will be all hat and no cattle – Editor).

Editorial Perspectives

  • Hakim’s earlier statement that ‘those who are not born in Islam, are unfortunate’, reflects what is in his mind. Hindus should understand how fake is the secularism of such people.
  • If Hakim organises Durga Puja, why does he never talk about the attacks on Durga Puja by his fellow Muslims ? Why did he not take efforts to stop these attacks ?
