Union Government’s NCERT has introduced an important change in its Social Science textbook !
New Delhi – The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) released the Class 6 Social Science textbook, ‘ Exploring Society: India and Beyond’, which mentioned the Harappan Society as the ‘Sindhu-Saraswati Civilisation’. Saraswati River is mentioned many times in the textbook. This textbook will be used in schools from the beginning of this very academic year. In the old textbooks, this river was mentioned only as the name of a river found in Vedic scriptures.
1. The textbook is divided into the following five sections for the convenience of students: ‘India and the World: Land and People’, ‘Tapestry of the Past’, ‘Our Cultural Heritage and Knowledge Traditions’, ‘Governance and Democracy’, and ‘Economic Life Around Us’.
2. According to the new textbook, the Saraswati River today goes by the name ‘Ghaggar’ in India, and in Pakistan, it is known as ‘Hakra’. Two maps are given in the book.
The decline of the Sindhu-Saraswati (Harappan) culture is attributed to low rainfall and the drying up of the Saraswati River and not to floods
The new textbook states that there are two agreed-upon reasons for the decline of Harappan culture: climate change leading to reduced rainfall and the drying up of the Saraswati River in its central basin. Due to this, the developed cities like Kalibanga or Banavali in the valley of this river are said to have become extinct.
Old textbook gave many reasons for the decline of the Harappan culture but does not mention the drying up of the Saraswati River. Besides this, one of the reasons given for the decline of this civilisation was the flood.
The new textbook references the ‘Indus-Saraswati Civilization’ instead of ‘Harappa’.
Significant changes in the NCERT’s social science textbook by the Central Government.
Along with these significant changes by the Central Government, many other changes are necessary.

Editorial Perspective
The Union Government needs to make several other changes besides this important change. These include Ramayan and Mahabharat being referred to as our history and not just epics or fictional stories. Also, it should be clarified that Sanatan Hinduism spread everywhere from this very land by explaining how the Aryan invasion theory is completely false. |
