Islamabad – Pakistan has launched a bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term for 2025-26. On 6th June 2024, Pakistan’s membership may be declared. In 2013, Pakistan was included as a non-permanent member of the UNSC. The experts in the field feel Pakistan’s entry may become a nuisance for India. China is a permanent member of the UNSC. In this situation, China and Pakistan can create a front against India.

Pakistan and India are both members of the Asia-Pacific group within the UN, which has two seats in the Security Council. The group has more than 50 members who follow a rotational method for the Council’s membership. This means that even India and Pakistan vote for each other as the group’s candidate. Pakistan supported India in 2019 and this year, India is expected to vote for Pakistan.

There are 5 permanent and 15 non-permanent members of the UNSC. China, France, Russia, Britain and the USA are the permanent members of the UNSC who hold ‘Veto’ in the UNSC. The non-permanent members are selected for a term of two years.
