US warns Pakistan of sanctions for doing trade with Iran

Washington – The US has openly threatened Pakistan’s Shahbaz Government, which gave a lavish welcome to Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi amid a state of war between Iran and Israel. The US State Department issued a statement warning that trade deals between Pakistan and Iran are ‘at risk of possible sanctions’.

Iran and Pakistan have decided to increase mutual trade to USD 10 billion (about Rs 83,341 crore). The US has announced a series of new sanctions on Iran following its attack on Israel.

1. A US State Department spokesman said countries considering doing business with Iran should be aware of the potential threat of sanctions.

2. US is the largest export market for Pakistan. It is also among the biggest investors in Pakistan, the spokesperson said.

3. Pakistan now wants to work on a ‘gas pipeline’ with Iran; but US does not agree to it. Due to this, US sanctions may be imposed on Pakistan in the future.
