Indore (Madhya Pradesh) – The Family Court in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, while hearing a case, stated, “Applying Kumkum / Sindoor is the religious duty of a married woman and it is a symbol of a married woman. Therefore, the woman should immediately go back to her husband after applying Kumkum / Sindoor.” At this point, reference was made to the order of the Assam-based Guwahati High Court which stated, “Not applying Kumkum / Sindoor by a married woman is considered cruelty.”
1. Indore Family Court principal judge NP Singh’s direction came while hearing a plea of a man seeking restoration of his rights under Hindu Marriage Act after his wife walked out of the marriage five years ago. She also stopped applying Kumkum.
2. The woman walked out of the marriage after accusing her husband of physical and mental harassment for dowry consuming drugs. A hearing was held in this Family Court. This time the Court heard the arguments of both sides.
3. When the woman appeared in Court to present her case, she had not applied Kumkum / Sindoor at that time. However, during the Court proceedings, when the matter was being considered, she acknowledged her mistake. Subsequently, the Court issued an order directing her to apply Kumkum / Sindoor and stay with her husband.
