FM Dr S Jaishankar reprimands the US and European countries for unwarranted concerns over CAA

New Delhi – Foreign Minister Dr S Jaishankar has responded to statements made by the US and European countries regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He rebuked their criticisms, stating, “India is not the first country to introduce such legislation. There are numerous examples of similar laws worldwide. Countries which are criticising us, should pay attention to the rules in their own countries.” He was speaking at a programme organised by a news channel here. The US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, also expressed concern about CAA, saying, “We are concerned about the notification of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act on 11^th March. We are closely monitoring how this act will be implemented.” Earlier, the Foreign Minister had emphasised that no one should comment on India’s internal affairs.

I am questioning their understanding of our history

Jaishankar stated, “I am not questioning the imperfections or otherwise of their (US) democracy or their principles or lack of it. I am questioning their understanding of our history. If you hear comments from many parts of the world, it is as if the partition of India never happened, there were no consequential problems which the CAA is supposed to address.”

World is full of examples of such laws

Foreign Minister Dr S Jaishankar further said that, “If you are questioning us, haven’t other democratic countries taken such a decision on various occasions ? I can give numerous examples of this. If you look at Europe, many European countries fast-tracked citizenship of people who were left behind in World War or in some cases much before the World War some historical issues which were not addressed. So, the world is full of such examples, and to me the context therefore is very important.”
