India and Pakistan may conduct nuclear tests again

Several countries across the world are possibly planning nuclear testing

Islamabad (Pakistan) – In the recent edition of ‘Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’, it has been claimed, based on a report, that India and Pakistan could consider conducting nuclear tests again. This report has been prepared by Francois Diaz-Maurin, the scientific advisor to the European Parliament on nuclear affairs and a nuclear security expert.

‘Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’, a journal, was started in 1945 by Albert Einstein and scientists associated with the Manhattan Project, the design and development of the first atomic bomb.

As per the report, despite a ban on conducting nuclear explosions under the international treaty, the issue of nuclear tests has taken centre stage. It has been observed from the pictures taken by satellites, that the construction activities at the nuclear test centres of the three big nuclear powers viz. USA, Russia and China have increased. In India and Pakistan, the last nuclear tests were conducted in 1998, and they have not signed the CTBT. They, too, are waiting to conduct such tests.

It has been stated in the report that after 1998, India declared a self-imposed ban on conducting further tests; but many Indian scientists felt that it was a hasty and unnecessary step. They said that the ban could be lifted whenever necessary.

The experts believe that Russia is building more underground tunnels at Novaya Zemlya, while China has built more such tunnels at Lop Nur. Russia rescinded its ratification of the treaty banning nuclear test explosions anywhere in the world, in November 2023.

‘The National Nuclear Security Administration’ in Nevada in the USA is expanding the nuclear test site. If any of the adversaries of the USA conducts nuclear tests, the USA would be ready to conduct similar tests within six months.

The only country that conducted nuclear tests in the 21st century, that is North Korea, is ready to conduct another underground nuclear test.

Iran has shown its technical capability to be added to the list of nuclear countries.

South Korea and Saudi Arabia say that they can develop nuclear weapons to counter their regional nuclear threats.
