Hindus allowed to worship at Gyanvapi : District Court’s Order

Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) – The District Court here issued an order allowing Hindus to perform puja regularly at ‘Vyas Ka Tekhana’ (Basement cellar) in Gyanvapi.

Now, every Hindu will now be able to go to the Tekhana, have darshan and worship.

Before 1993, puja was performed regularly here, but the then Government imposed a ban on it. The Varanasi District Collector has been directed by the Court to make necessary arrangements within seven days for Hindus to start performing puja regularly.

After the Court’s orders, a road will be made from where Nandi bull (Deity Shiva’s vehicle) is placed in the premises to the ‘Vyas Ka Tekhana’ of Kashi Vishwanath Mandir. Presently, there is an iron fence between the two. The puja will be performed under the Kashi Vishwanath Trust.

The recently published report of the Archaeological Survey of India has confirmed the demolition of a temple for the construction of the mosque. The Court’s permission to perform puja has created an atmosphere of joy amongst Hindus.

Representing the Hindu litigants, Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain said that the dream of Hindus has come true. The Vyas family will now perform puja in the basement. Till 1993, the family of Somnath Vyas used to perform puja, but on the verbal orders of the then Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, it was stopped.

On 1st February 1986, Justice Krishna Mohan Pandey had ordered opening of the lock of Shriram Mandir at Shriram Janmabhoomi. We are comparing today’s order with that issued by Justice Pandey. It is a historic decision of the Varanasi District Court. Earlier Governments misused their powers to stop Hindus from performing puja, but the Court has stopped all this today. Our next aim will be the survey of Wazukhana (The place used for washing hands and feet before namaz).

Gyanvapi under control of Varanasi District Administration

On 24th January 2024, the Varanasi District Administration took control of the basement located at the southern end of the Gyanvapi premises. Shailendra Kumar Pathak, the Chief Priest of Acharya Veda Vyas Peetha Temple had filed a case in this regard after which Varanasi District Court handed over the control of the southern basement to Varanasi District Magistrate.

Editorial Perspective

The worship at Gyanvapi was stopped on the verbal orders of the then Government, and could not be restarted even after 30 years. This is disgraceful for the Governments that followed. Every Hindu wants to know why the Governments could not issue similar verbal orders to resume the worship ?
