Despite Supreme Court’s order, Indians across the country are bursting firecrackers on a large-scale

New Delhi – While the festival of Diwali is being celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country, large-scale bursting of firecrackers is also observed. In many cities including Delhi, the capital city, air pollution has exceeded hazardous levels already; but the citizens seem to have ignored this fact and continue to burst firecrackers. Even though the Supreme Court has given directions in this regard, those have been ignored in many cities including Delhi.

The Supreme Court has in fact prohibited the bursting of firecrackers completely in Delhi NCR. Yet, firecrackers are being burst, violating the Court’s order. Environmentalist Bhavreen Kandhari said in this regard, “The Supreme Court’s firm stance on firecrackers got blown in the smoke of the firecrackers. Despite warnings and a complete ban, the authorities have failed yet again to reinforce the Court’s order. Wondering what will be the Supreme Court’s stance now? We are allowing our children to choke in the name of celebrations”.

Editorial Perspectives

  • While giving an order against firecrackers, it seems that there should be an order against their manufacturing, selling and stocking too.
  • Firecrackers alone are not the cause of pollution. There are various causes of pollution throughout the year. It is important to identify them, find solutions to curb that pollution and implement solutions strictly.
