Bangladesh mass protests; one lakh citizens take to roads against PM Sheikh Hasina

The House of the Chief Justice was attacked and one Police officer was killed !

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – One lakh Bangladeshi citizens came on the streets demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The violence that followed took the life of a Police officer, while more than 100 people were injured. Violence erupted as the activists of two major opposition parties viz. ‘Bangladesh National Party’ and ‘Jamat-E-Islami’ took out a huge rally to protest, on the 28th of October 2023.

General elections will be held in Bangladesh in January 2024. Against this background, the opposition parties are demanding PM Sheikh Hasina’s stepping down and the formation of a temporary caretaker Government, for holding impartial elections.

It was the biggest demonstration in the last 45 months as per the local newspaper Daily Star.

There was an attack on the house of Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan. The security agencies tried to overpower the attackers, leading to clashes at Kakrel Chowk, Supreme Court area, and in front of the House of Chief Justice.

At least 13 vehicles and a Police chowki were set on fire, while more than 10 vehicles were damaged.
