Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto threatens India

Islamabad (Pakistan) – “The dispute over the Indus Waters Treaty should not be viewed merely as an environmental or diplomatic issue, but as an issue related to national security and survival. Pakistan’s nuclear policy is meant for certain extremely difficult situations. Attempts to cripple the country’s economy or block its water resources fall under such rare situations. If the blocking of Pakistan’s water resources creates a situation akin to a nuclear crisis, then Pakistan should not view it merely as an environmental issue, but as an attack on Pakistan’s very existence, which requires a collective military response,” threatened Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto while referring to India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. He was speaking at a programme organised in Islamabad.

According to Pakistan, 80% of its agricultural land and economy depend on the waters of the Indus river system. Under the Indus Waters Treaty, the waters of the eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas and Sutlej) belong to India, while the waters of the western rivers (Indus, Jhelum and Chenab) are allocated to Pakistan. Pakistan alleges that India has violated its rights by constructing dams and canals, and by not sharing hydrological data, thereby putting its economy and energy sector at risk.
